The Most Holy Place was separated from the rest of the tabernacle, and later the temple, by a massive curtain, which is described in Exodus (26:31-33).
This curtain, in prohibiting access to the Most Holy Place, was a constant reminder that because of sin humans are forever banned from the presence of God.
This separation from God, and therefore from spiritual life, began in Genesis 3. There, as a judgement on human rejection of God, cherubim with flaming swords were put in place to ban and prevent access to the ‘tree of life’ (Genesis 3:22-24).
On the curtain that prevented access to the Most Holy Place, golden cherubim were embroidered, with the constant message:
you are disqualified, you are barred, you have no right of access in to the presence of God.
On the yearly Day of Atonement, one man, the high priest, having performed strict cleansing rituals, was permitted to go beyond this prohibitive curtain, to enter the symbolic presence of God on behalf of the people, and on their behalf to present a blood offering to male atonement for sins (16:15-17).
But here is a very instructive thing: this massive curtain was literally ripped away at the very moment that Jesus Christ died (Matthew 27:50, 51).
It was not ripped away by human hands, but by God, because by the death of Jesus Christ the sin-barrier banning us from God’s presence is removed and those who believe in him have present and permanent access into the presence of God.
What are you waiting for…
There is therefore no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus
For old things have passed away and behold all things have become new..
Come to the cross where Jesus died for you and for me. To bring light to your darkness and make crooked paths straight again.
